National Agriculture Policy

Government has been announcing policies related to agriculture in its five year programme but a national policy specifically was announced for the sector in post liberlication after some contentions issue coming for the international trade in this sector. Thus, the National Policy on Agriculture seeks to actualize the vast untapped potential of Indian agriculture, strengthen rural inrastructure to support faster agricultural growth, promote vale addition, accelerate the growth of agro business, create emplyment in rural areas, secure a fair standard of living for the farmers and agricultural workers and their families, discourage migration to urban areas and face the challenges arising out of economic liberlization and globalization.

Objectives and Targets of the National Policy in Eleventh Plan
  • Growth rate in excess of 4% per annum to develop the agriculture sector.
  • Growth to be sustainable and widespread.
  • Both domestic markets and external factors providing the impetus for growth.
  • Technically sound, economically viable, environmentally non-degrading, and socially acceptable use of country's natural resources were to be promoted through a policy.
